Long-haul flights can be exciting when you’re heading to a dream destination, but those hours in the air can leave you feeling stiff, dehydrated and uncomfortable. Fortunately, with a few easy tips, you can make your journey much more pleasant.
The low humidity in airplane cabins can dry you out faster than you might expect. Bring a refillable water bottle and sip regularly throughout the flight to stay hydrated. Be mindful of caffeine and alcohol, as they can leave you feeling even more dehydrated.
2. Move Around to Keep Circulation Flowing
Sitting for hours on a long-haul flight can slow your circulation, which isn’t just uncomfortable — it can also cause swollen legs and feet — and in rare cases — blood clots. Aim to move up and down the aisle every few hours, or do some in-seat exercises like ankle rolls and toe flexes.
Getting up and moving might be trickier if you’re trapped in a middle or window seat. Alternatively, pack a pair of compression socks to reduce swelling and discomfort while on long-haul flights.
3. Pack Healthy Snacks
Airplane meals are convenient, but they can be loaded with salt and preservatives, and you might not enjoy the food on your flight. Packing some healthy snacks — like fresh fruit, nuts, trail mix and protein bars — can boost your energy levels without the heavy, bloated feeling that sometimes follows airplane food. Plus, having your own snacks means you won’t be stuck waiting until the next meal service.
4. Wear Comfortable Layers
Airplane cabins can be notoriously chilly, so dress in loose, breathable layers that you can adjust as needed. Comfortable clothes will also help you avoid unnecessary discomfort, especially on long-haul flights. Think comfy joggers, a soft top and a warm hoodie that can double as a pillow if needed.
5. Choose Your Seat Wisely
Selecting the right seat can make all the difference on a long-haul flight. The aisle seat is the best pick if you want easy access to stretch and move around. Window seats are ideal if you prefer to lean against something to sleep or don’t want to be disturbed. For extra legroom, consider an emergency exit row or a seat near the bulkhead. Just keep in mind these may cost a bit more or need to be reserved early.
6. Get Enough Rest
Sleep is one of the best ways to pass time on long-haul flights. Bring a quality neck pillow, a cozy blanket and some noise-canceling headphones or earplugs to make drifting off easier. Try to create a mini “bedtime” routine — dim the lights and relax with a book or calming music.
7. Refresh Your Skin Mid-Flight
The dry cabin air isn’t just tough on hydration — it’s also rough on your skin. Keep some moisturizing products handy, like lip balm, face mist and a good hand cream. Taking a couple of minutes to refresh your skin can make you feel more comfortable and ready to face the day when you land.
8. Practice Deep Breathing and Relaxation
Long-haul flights can be stressful, especially if you’re not used to being in the air for that long. Deep breathing exercises can help you reduce stress and feel less anxious. Inhale deeply, hold for a few seconds and exhale slowly. This is a simple way to keep calm and centered, even at thousands of feet in the air.
9. Make Sure You Have Something to Do
Long-haul flights can feel endless if you’re unprepared, so make sure you have enough entertainment to keep the boredom at bay. Bring along a book you’ve been meaning to read, download movies or shows for offline viewing or even bring a travel journal to jot down ideas and plans.
Before you leave, double-check that all your devices are fully charged, and consider packing a portable charger or extra battery, just in case. Having a few entertainment options makes the time fly by and gives you a chance to enjoy yourself before the real adventure begins.
10. Freshen Up Before You Land
Keep a small toiletry kit with essentials like toothpaste, a toothbrush, facial wipes and deodorant to keep hygienic while in the air. Freshening up mid-flight or just before you land can help you feel rejuvenated and more comfortable. Toss in a mini bottle of hand sanitizer to keep your hands clean and germ-free, especially when access to a sink is limited. Opt for a sanitizer with an alcohol concentration of 60% or more, as these are most effective at killing germs.
Comfort for the Long Haul
Staying healthy and comfortable on a long-haul flight is all about preparation and mindful choices. With these simple tips, you’ll arrive at your destination feeling ready to explore, not exhausted from the flight.
