Six people remain in a Brazilian hospital a day after after they were injured in an Air Europa plane that encountered heavy turbulence, the airline said Tuesday.
Air Europa flight UX045 was headed to Montevideo, Uruguay, from Madrid early Monday when it hit “severe turbulence,” the airline said. The Boeing 787-9 was diverted to Natal in northeast Brazil, where the injured were treated at the airport and in local hospitals.
Most of the injured had bruises and contusions, Air Europa said. The airline did not say how many passengers were injured, though Natal Airport told ABC News that 30 people received care at the airport and 10 were transported to a hospital.
The Air Europa incident comes six weeks after dozens were sent to the hospital and one passenger died when a Singapore Airlines plane was jolted by unexpected severe turbulence over Myanmar.
Air Europa said Tuesday that it “deeply regrets” what happened.
“The airline hopes for a quick recovery of the affected passengers and is at the disposal of all its clients to assist them any way that may be necessary,” Air Europa said.
On Tuesday morning, a different aircraft dispatched by Air Europa carried 303 passengers from Brazil to Montevideo to complete their trip.
